Why did you want to complete your graduate degree?
First and foremost, I knew that if I wanted to increase my professionalism and make any moves in my career, that I would definitely need a graduate degree. My graduate degree has broadened my world view, given me a more mature outlook on my profession, and also helped me gain solid financial footing. I am a more attractive and competitive applicant with my graduate degree and that makes a huge difference in landing a new job or moving up the corporate ladder.
Was it difficult to finance?
Graduate school was difficult. I had to put off buying a house and that new car I wanted, but the sacrifice is proving well worth it with the advances I am receiving in my career. The quote "short term pain for a long term gain" summarizes my financial status while in graduate school.
What are the major differences between undergraduate and graduate studies?
The professors seem to hold the students to a higher calibre, which correlates to the higher level academic requirements. There were a lot more writing assignments, and the overall projects and tests seemed harder than in undergraduate school.
How many hours were you expected to study?
The hours of study in graduate school were dependent upon the work load of the course. Some courses required a long-term project, which was drawn out through a semester, while some required a quiz or test every session. The syllabus you receive in the beginning of the course helps you road map how heavy your work load is going to be for each semester.
Would you recommend having a job during school?
I had no choice but to work while in graduate school. If you are able to put off work and focus on your studies, I think that is extremely beneficial; however, I think reality for most graduate students is that work is a must, whether it be part-time or full-time. A graduate degree requires a lot of patience and dedication.
Were you involved in student clubs or extracurricular activities? Good experience?
I was not involved in any student clubs during the time I took my graduate degree. Unfortunately, with a full time job and course load, I was unable to spend any time doing any student clubs or participating in any extra events my school had to offer.
Has earning your undergraduate degree helped you find a good job?
Yes. It helped me bump to the next higher level in my career, which also bumped me to a higher salary.
