College Test Preparation Tips and Strategies
GMAT, LSAT, GRE, MCAT, SAT, PSAT, ACT, CLEP and AP

College Entrance Test Preparation:

Be sure to consider the preparation that suits your individual learning style.

  • Books - There's no substitution for preparation and practice, and some prep books can give you both. Most prep books offer test-taking strategies and practice tests. Get a good prep book and you will most certainly increase your score.
  • Classes - Prep courses can help involve homework and practice tests. A physical class, however, may better prepare you because it more closely replicates the environment of the real test. They are offered through various learning centers and high schools.
  • Personal Tutor - If you need one on one attention with someone who will guide you specifically in areas you need most work on this might be for you. They are also offered through various learning centers and in some cases through high schools.

Study Tips:

  • Give yourself plenty of time before test date to study.
  • Plan specific times each day/week to study.
  • Eliminate distractions. Turn off your cell phone and find a quiet place.
  • Take breaks. Give yourself time to clear your head and stretch, so you can stay focused.
  • Set reasonable goals each study session.
  • Start with harder topics first. This is when you have the most mental energy.
  • Try studying a variety of ways. Study alone, with friends, using a book, using practice tests, etc. This will help keep you motivated.

Tips - Before the Test

  • Prepare! Study and know the material being assessed on the test. Begin studying and preparing well in advance to give yourself plenty of time.
  • Get a good night's sleep before test day.
  • Eat before the test. This will give you energy and keep you focused.
  • Use the bathroom before the test.
  • Arrive early. This will give you time to get settled, gather your thoughts and take a few deep breaths before the test begins.
  • Know what to bring. Whether you need pencils, paper, or a calculator it is important not to forget the essentials.

Tips - During the Test

  • Read the directions carefully.
  • Budget your time. You don't want to spend too much time on one question.
  • Know when to skip a question. If you are unsure of an answer, or think it will take up too much time to figure out then skip it and come back to it at the end.
  • Always read the whole question carefully. Don't make assumptions about what the question might be.
  • Go over your answers when you are finished if there is time. Look for careless mistakes or questions you may have missed.
  • Keep a positive attitude and try to stay relaxed.
